ePADD is free and open source software that supports appraisal, processing, discovery, and delivery for email. ePADD is a finalist for the 2018 Digital Preservation Awards.
This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and experience to begin to use ePADD in order to analyze, screen, search, and browse email archives with historical, cultural, and/or research value.
Peter Chan (ePADD Project Manager, Digital Archivist, Stanford University) and Josh Schneider (ePADD Community Manager, Assistant University Archivist, Stanford University) will lead the tutorial, orienting participants to the software, demoing its capabilities, and talking participants through the steps of using ePADD to analyze, screen, search, and browse email archives.

Word vectors have become a popular method of numericizing words in the Digital Humanities only recently, but they have been around for a long time. In this workshop, we will be covering a short history of vectorization methods starting with the simplest methods (count-based vectors) to more advanced approaches (neural network-generated embeddings). We will also examine the potential caveats while using these methods, and discuss the interpretation of data-driven results. The workshop will be led with hands-on examples to encourage participants to apply these methods on their own research agendas.
Eun Seo Jo is a PhD student in History at Stanford, studying U.S.-foreign relations and Digital Humanities approaches to historical data. Her dissertation is about the meaning of modernization theory in postbellum American foreign relations, using various digital applications on the extensive files of the U.S. Department of State’s series, Foreign Relations of the United States.

Access to image-based resources is fundamental to research, scholarship and the transmission of cultural knowledge. Digital images are a container for much of the information content in the Web-based delivery of images, books, newspapers, manuscripts, maps, scrolls, single sheet collections, and archival materials. A growing community of the world’s leading research libraries and image repositories have embarked on an effort to collaboratively produce an interoperable technology and community framework for image delivery. IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) has the following goals: To give scholars an unprecedented level of uniform and rich access to image-based resources hosted around the world, To define a set of common application programming interfaces that support interoperability between image repositories, and to develop, cultivate and document shared technologies, such as image servers and web clients, that provide a world-class user experience in viewing, comparing, manipulating and annotating images.” (http://iiif.io).
This course will introduce students to the basic concepts and technologies that make IIIF possible, allowing for guided, hands-on experience in installing servers and clients that support IIIF, and utilizing the advanced functionality that IIIF provides for interactive image-based research, such as annotation.
